Traineeship (Bulgarian Lawyer-Linguist) – European Central Bank

Function:

The European Central Bank (ECB) is offering a traineeship in its Legislation Division for a Bulgarian Lawyer Linguist. Candidates must be recent graduates or postgraduates in law.
The Division is responsible for preparing the ECB’s legal acts in the official EU languages, for reviewing legal texts for legal, linguistic and terminological consistency and for maintaining a legal terminology database.
The Division also provides advice and expertise in the development of ECB supervisory decisions within the context of the Single Supervisory Mechanism. It contributes to the delivery of large projects in the banking supervision field and helps implement common policies in this area.
Furthermore, the Division is responsible for publishing and disseminating the ECB’s legal framework and other legal publications.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain experience in legal translation-related tasks. While at the ECB, the trainee will be expected to contribute to the translation of legal texts from English into Bulgarian, and to assist the Bulgarian Lawyer-Linguist in the revision and/or proof-reading of legal and other texts in Bulgarian that are destined for publication.
The trainee’s work will be revised by the Division’s Bulgarian Lawyer-Linguist.

Qualifications and experience:

Applicants must have the following knowledge and competencies:
Candidates must have:

  • a degree in Bulgarian law from a Bulgarian university (квалификация „юрист” и университетска степен „магистър по право”), or a degree in law from a university outside Bulgaria which has been recognised in Bulgaria as equivalent;
  • a demonstrable interest in translation work;
  • a demonstrable interest in financial and economic affairs.

It would be an advantage for candidates to have:

  • good knowledge of EU law;
  • knowledge of Bulgarian banking and financial law;
  • a qualification in translation and/or English studies;
  • experience of legal translation work.

Generic technical competencies:
Candidates must have:

  • a mastery-level command of Bulgarian with proven drafting ability, as well as an advanced-level command of English with proven drafting ability;
  • a working knowledge of standard MS Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

It would be an advantage for candidates to have:

  • a good knowledge of one or more other official EU languages, in addition to Bulgarian and English.

The successful candidate will have the following behavioural competencies:

  • takes responsibility for his/her own actions;
  • prioritises tasks and pays attention to detail.

Further Information:

Traineeship for an initial period of four months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of twelve months, depending on performance and business needs.

The selection committee may place suitable candidates on a reserve list, from which candidates may be appointed to similar positions in the same or another business area. It may also be decided to fill the position(s) advertised in this vacancy notice with a suitable candidate or candidates from the reserve list resulting from a recruitment procedure for a similar position. Candidates will be informed accordingly if this happens.
