Belgian JPO Programme – Call for applications with closing date 23 July 2017!

The following 2 positions are open in the context of the JPO Programme sponsored by the Government of Belgium.
They are exclusively addressed to candidates with Belgian citizenship.
Candidates should be no more than 32 of age as of 31 December of the year of application.

1. JPO in Humanitarian Affairs

Country: Jordan
Location (City): Amman

Duration:1 year (with possible extension for another year)

Duties, responsibilities and Output Expectations
Support the Mandate of the OCHA Regional Office for Syria Crisis in Amman, Jordan.
Within delegated authority, the Associate Humanitarian Affairs Officer (JPO) will be responsible for the following duties:
• In consultation with a senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer, assists in the design and preparation of studies on humanitarian, disaster, emergency relief and related issues and in various follow-up activities.
• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources on assigned topics/issues.
• Contributes to the preparation of various written documents, e.g. drafts sections of studies, background papers, policy guidelines, parliamentary documents etc.
• Develops and maintains reference/resource information on specific topics or policy
-related issues; responds to various inquiries and information requests internally and externally.
• Assists in the production of appeals for international assistance; ensures the proper use and spending of donor contributions channeled through OCHA.
• Assists in the organization of meetings, seminars, conferences, work shops, etc. with other agencies and partners to facilitate exchanges of professional expertise and views on specific humanitarian-related subjects/issues; serves as reporter to such events.
• Maintains awareness of current humanitarian affairs and related issues, to include relevant political, policy, gender considerations or other developments in specific subject area, country or region concerned.
• Participates in technical assistance, disaster assessment or other missions.
• Participates in project/programme formulation and mobilization of relevant resources.
• Performs other duties as required.

2. JPO in Human Rights

Country: Switzerland
Location (City): Geneva
Duration:1 year (with possible extension for another year)
Duties, responsibilities and Output Expectations
Support the Mandate of the Women’s Rights and Gender Section of OHCHR in Geneva.
  • Provide assistance and support to OHCHR’s activities in the areas of women’s human rights, particularly related to wrongful gender stereotyping;
  • Assist in implementing recommendations from OHCHR studies on gender stereotyping as a human rights violation and eliminating judicial gender stereotyping, including working with human rights mechanisms to address harmful gender stereotypes in their work;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of activities on women’s human rights, including training materials on addressing judicial gender stereotyping;
  • Assist in advising OHCHR colleagues, and partner UN entities, on women’s human rights in the context of international discussions, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as at key forums such as the Commission on the Status of Women and the Human Rights Council
  • Research and draft talking points and speeches on women’s human rights and wrongful gender stereotyping, for the High Commissioner, the Deputy High Commissioner, the Assistant Secretary General in NY, and other senior managers as requested
  • Research and draft reports to the Human Rights Council on women’s human rights
  • Assist in providing inputs to position papers, reports, and other documents developed by the Office on the areas
  • Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.
