Function:

The Directorate General Communications of the European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking a translator of French mother tongue for a full-time position (ESCB/IO contract of one year’s duration with the possibility of an extension until September 2019) in the Romance & Mediterranean Languages Section of its Language Services Division.

The Language Services Division has four language sections and a terminology/language technology unit. The Division is responsible for providing the ECB with linguistic expertise and support in the official languages of the European Union in close collaboration with the national central banks and the national supervisory authorities.

Working with two other French translators and reporting to the Head of Section, you will be responsible for translating texts from English into French, including documents related to banking supervision, in close collaboration with the linguistic staff and other experts at the Nationale Bank van België/Banque Nationale de Belgique and the Banque de France.

As French Translator you will be entrusted with the following main tasks:

  • translating texts from English into French, including documents related to banking supervision, revising such translations, editing texts drafted in French and proofreading texts destined for publication in French;
  • contributing to the development of the ECB’s existing database of multilingual terminology related to the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and the Single Supervisory Mechanism by researching and compiling such terminology and by expanding translation memories in French.

You will be expected to follow the established working procedures of the Division. In particular, translators have to coordinate their activities and plan efficiently together, schedule their work on a joint basis, share information and transfer knowledge and skills to each other.

Qualifications and experience:

You will bring to the role:

  • a master’s degree in, preferably, translation, applied linguistics, modern languages or other relevant field, or a bachelor’s degree in one of these fields combined with four years of relevant professional experience;
  • at least two full years’ proven professional experience as a translator working out of English into French, preferably in the economic or financial field;
  • a sound background knowledge of economics and finance would be an asset;
  • experience working as an in-house translator, preferably in a team, within well-defined and structured translation processes, would be an asset;
  • a mastery-level command of French and an advanced command of English;
  • familiarity with a terminology management package, such as the suite of SDL translation tools, would be an asset;
  • a good knowledge of at least one other official language of the EU;
  • a very good knowledge of MS Office, in particular Word and Outlook.

Further Information:

ESCB/IO contract of one year’s’ duration (with a possibility of extension until September 2019).

To enable the Division to maintain its business continuity capability, the successful applicant will occasionally be expected to perform work during non-standard working hours.
