Summerschools, Kurse u.ä.: Memory culture and politics of memory in postconflict societies of the Global South

The last two decades have shown that many societies that have had a traumatic historical experience with violence have developed an especially deep interest in dealing with their past. Addressing these experiences is both a result as well as a factor of societal and cultural changes. It is hereby necessary to differentiate between memory cultures, which are manifested in different forms and media, and the politics of history, which is understood as the support of public memories for political reasons and the goals of political agendas. At the same time, one must question how memories are passed on from one generation to the next, which has been intensely discussed since the turn of the century under the terms memory and post memory. In recent years, this discourse has become highly important in Latin American post-conflict societies. The international theory development must therefore be considered in the critical reflection of this topic. This is also the case for the rapidly growing internationalization of collective memory of traumatic historical experiences. Examples of this are the prosecutions and trials in International Courts of Justice, as well as the appropriation and medialization for international contexts.

The regional focus of this Summer School will be the Cono Sur societies of Argentina and Chile. Some working sessions will be dedicated to case studies from other world regions, for example Namibia, the Middle East and Germany, in order to compare them with the Cono Sur experiences.
