Principal Economist (Speechwriter) – European Central Bank (ECB)

ecb-logoThe European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking a Principal Economist (Speechwriter). The successful applicant will be responsible for preparing speeches and other written communication for the ECB’s Executive Board.
The successful applicant will work within the Counsel to the Executive Board and join a team consisting of an Adviser (Senior Speechwriter), an Economist (Speechwriter) and a Research Analyst. The position will involve working in close liaison with Executive Board members, their counsellors and the relevant business areas to ensure full awareness of the current policy discussions and the desired policy messages.
The successful applicant will be entrusted with the following main tasks:

  • contributing to the planning and formulation of policy messages for the ECB’s external communication, working closely with Executive Board members, their counsellors and the business areas concerned;
  • conceptualising and drafting analytical speeches for Executive Board members suitable for high-profile events and targeted at international audiences;
  • ensuring efficient coordination of the input for the speechwriting process by maintaining close cooperation with the relevant business areas and by following key policy debates, analysis and research;
  • reviewing and editing speeches and other texts to ensure the consistency and quality of the ECB’s external communication vis-à-vis its policy statements.

Qualifications and experience:

Applicants must have the following knowledge and competencies:

  • a master’s degree in economics, finance, political economy, international relations or a related discipline;
  • several years of professional experience working on issues related to macroeconomics, public policy or monetary policy;
  • experience in preparing speeches for senior policy-makers or other relevant experience (such as an economic journalist or policy analyst);
  • an in-depth understanding of the ECB’s monetary policy, the euro area economy and the institutional framework of the Economic and Monetary Union;
  • an understanding of the mission, the tasks and the responsibilities of the ECB;
  • a mastery-level command of English with excellent drafting skills;
  • an intermediate-level command of at least one other official language of the EU;
  • a working knowledge of MS Office, in particular Word and PowerPoint.

The following knowledge and competencies would be considered an asset:

  • a PhD in economics, finance, political economy, international relations or a related discipline;
  • at least three years of professional experience working in the aforementioned fields of discipline;
  • experience in undertaking economic or financial research with an understanding of quantitative methods and data analysis;
  • a thorough knowledge of the working methods of the Eurosystem and other relevant international and European institutions.

  • is able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results under time pressure, while paying close attention to detail and accuracy;
  • is able to critically reflect on his or her work in order to ensure continuous improvement in quality;
  • is able to collaborate and share information with team members and work towards common goals;
  • is able to discreetly handle market-sensitive information.
