Press Officer – Greenpeace

Greenpeace_logoGreenpeace is an international non-profit global campaigning organisation. Their independence and global reach enables them to stand for positive change through action in order to defend nature and promote peace. They investigate and expose global environmental problems, confront those in positions of power and present alternative solutions.

As one of the press officers, you will focus on gaining coverage for their energy campaign work and identifying opportunities for Greenpeace to make strategic interventions that help them steer the debate on energy towards a clean, safe and secure energy system. You will also lead investigations into the targets and ensure the results get huge publicity, furthering our campaigns. Greenpeace’s energy press officer is on the frontline of the political battle to tackle climate change. Greenpeace need a politically savvy media operator who enjoys the cut and thrust of the daily news cycle, has a good grasp of all UK media, and has some understanding of who holds the power and pulls the strings when it comes to UK climate policy. In any given week your work will range from pitching an exclusive to the Financial Times to standing in a farmer’s field in Lancashire discussing the impacts of fracking on local water supplies.

You’ll be great at spotting opportunities to intervene in the political debate about energy and climate change, and be able to translate complex political, scientific and environmental information into succinct and clear messages that successfully reach their target audiences. As well as your communication, interpersonal skills and diplomacy, this role will also test your ability to organise and improvise. You will need to be equally adept in facing and communicating with openly hostile audiences as with the passionately supportive. You will also have an understanding of the value of investigative work and of the role of mobilising audiences towards political action.
