Job Vacancy: Programme Assistant – EMHRN

Euro-Mediterranean-Human-Rights-Network-EMHRN-logoThe Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) is looking to recruit a motivated professional to assist its programme on the Mashrek region, in particular Egypt. The position would be a permanent contract starting as soon as possible in early 2015, with location at EMHRN Brussels office.

Description of Tasks

The assistant will be part of EMHRN’s Advocacy Department, managed by the Advocacy Director. S/he will support, and work under the supervision of the Mashrek and Turkey Advocacy Officer, including by undertaking the following tasks:

  • Organise practically and logistically advocacy and field missions, regional meetings and training activities, including sending invitation letters, booking hotels and flights, preparing and managing budgets, accounting, etc.;
  • Assist in coordinating the work with EMHRN members and partners during the drafting of reports, statements, press releases and other documents;
  • Help with the implementation of relevant activities, including drafting letters and briefing papers; ensure their printing, translation and publishing, as well as disseminating them to EU institutions, EU Member States, civil society organisations, and relevant international organisations;
  • Monitor EU, UN activities/calendars relevant to the programme’s work, and inform EMHRN management, other programme coordinators, members and Executive Committee thereof;
  • Participate in various meetings, take notes, and prepare meeting reports and minutes;
  • Maintain and update the database of contacts, when relevant in cooperation with the Communication Department;
  • Assist in drafting narrative and financial reports, as well as internal evaluation reports.

Profile, Skills and Background

  • University Degree in European Studies, Human Rights, Law, Political and Social Science – other degrees may also be considered;
  • Keen interest and preferably proven work experience in the protection of human rights, NGOs of the EU/Middle East;
  • Fluency in English and Arabic (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French will be considered as an asset.
  • Computer literacy in Word (at least basic Excel knowledge is required);
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and orally;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Keen attention to details;
  • Self-motivated, well-organised, able to work independently and efficiently under pressure;
  • Readiness to travel on an ad hoc basis and in accordance with EMHRN’s internal security policy in Europe and the Arab world, also potentially on week-ends or public holidays.

About the EMHRN

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) was founded in January 1997 in response to the Barcelona Declaration of November 1995 and the establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP). It is the coordinating body of about 80 human rights organisations and institutions as well as individuals from over 30 countries. The EMHRN organisational structure is built on a General Assembly, an Executive committee, working groups and a secretariat.

Rooted in civil society the Network seeks to develop and strengthen partnerships between NGOs in the EuroMed region, i.e. networking aimed at strengthening the capacity of members to act and interact within the context of the region, the European Neighbourhood Policy and other EU-Arab cooperation frameworks.

The EMHRN head office is situated in Copenhagen.

Remuneration: According to EMHRN salary scale, based on years of experience + reimbursement of public transport + lunch vouchers
