Research Associate – Political Settlement Project, University of Ulster

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to the development, operation and support of the Political Settlements and Gender work stream of the DFID-funded research project ‘Political Settlements Research: Towards Open and Inclusive Settlements’. The Political Settlements and Gender work stream aims to conceptualise gender and political settlements, understand strategies by women to intervene into and transform political settlements, and elucidate the relationship of factors such as violence against women and international legal norms for gender equality on local political settlements.

The Political Settlements and Gender work stream will be situated within the Transitional Justice Institute at the Ulster University. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be a member of the Political Settlements and Gender team and will work under the supervision of the work stream coordinator, Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin. The position will focus on aspects associated to data collection and coding and dissemination of research findings. The post-holder will have major administrative responsibility for the Political Settlements and Gender work stream, such as updating the project website, coordinating related events and conferences, and using multiple platforms to disseminate project outputs.

The post holder would be expected to evidence strong commitment to their own research goals, as well as to the broader research aims of the unit for the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The post holder is expected to play a role in the delivery of a postgraduate Masters degree in Gender, Conflict and Human Rights (LL.M) and/or specialised gender/human rights teaching at undergraduate level and related Short Courses.

Main Duties

Conduct a scoping study and literature review of gender and political settlements in order to underpin further conceptual work of the work stream;

Support data collection, coding and analysis of focus groups and interviews;  

Making open source data publicly available through the project website;

Update quantitative data on domestic violence data set and analysis in post-conflict Northern Ireland;

Coordinate the work stream conference, under supervision of the work stream coordinator;

Engage proactively with and widely disseminate project- and program-level research results among legal, regional, and international stakeholders, under the supervision of the work stream coordinator.

Any other duties appropriate to the grade and nature of the post, including contribution to the work of the Institute.

Whilst the posts are campus based, the University operates as a unitary institution, and from time to time staff may also be asked to undertake teaching duties on other campuses.  In addition, staff are expected to attend meetings on any campus as appropriate.
