The position begins in November 2015 or as agreed. The assignment is maximum of four years.

The position is available at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography. The Documentary Film group focuses on artistic research and art-practice-based projects. Through theorizing and filmmaking it studies the tradition of the social and political in documentary film expression and also provokes and catalyzes new ways of reflecting the societal crisis in Finnish and other societies.

Main duties and responsibilities of the doctoral candidate

Full time doctoral candidates are expected to complete their DA in four years, during which they should complete their DA thesis and doctoral studies, participate in research projects and write journal articles around their topic area and teach relevant courses.

The doctoral student conducts his/her doctoral studies as part of the research group, developing his/her own practice-based/artistic research project. The doctoral student would also take part in developing the research activity at the department, participate in organizing seminars and conferences.

Key selection criteria

The key criteria for selection of the doctoral candidate are a strong interest in the methods and qualifications of artistic research and new and interesting aspects in relation to questions of the poetics and politics of documentary film expression.

  • A Masters level degree

  • A postgraduate study place in the Aalto Doctoral Programme in Arts, Design and Architecture or applying for and receiving a post-graduate study place by December 31st 2015

  • Research skills

  • Collaboration skills

  • Fluent skills in English

Salary and location

The monthly salary will be paid according to the University’s salary scheme, depending on the candidate’s expertise and tasks, from 2200 eur upwards. The position is located at Aalto University’s Arabia campus in Helsinki.
