PhD student Nanophysics

Task description
The PhD student will functionalize appropriate surfaces by means of nanopatterning using unconventional lithography techniques. The successful candidate will focus on the preparation of highly ordered arrays of size-selected metal nanoparticles taking advantage of the self-assembly of macromolecules into micellar structures, and their application as (consumable) masks during a subsequent pattern transfer into the substrate surface. Electronic and electrical properties of the resulting nanopattern will be derived using local as well as global probes.

Profile

  • The candidate has research interest

  • The candidate should enjoy working creatively with state-of-the-art preparation and characterization tools in a multidisciplinary environment including national and international collaborations with other research groups. Experience in the self-assembly of macromolecular structures, in surface analysis (in general), in UHV technology and in advanced electrical characterization on the nanometre scale are beneficial.

Diploma
Master degree in physics or materials science (or equivalent).

Employment
Scholarship for a period of 2 x 2 years (with evaluation after 2 years).

Location: Hasselt, Belgium

Application deadline: 27 September 2015
