Teagasc Post Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 – Environmental Economics

cosmopolitalians.eu-logo-tmbHarmony is a research project that will assess current nutrient management on farms in High Status or sensitive catchments and identify the most relevant and appropriate measures for agriculture based on the predominant soils and hydrological constraints on farms in these areas. The successful applicant will work within a consortium of established scientists in areas of soil science, catchment science and socio-economic research, to evaluate the acceptance of selected measures among the farming community in these areas.

The basic functions of this post are as follows:

  • Close working relationship with the scientists working on the project
  • Evaluate the cost-effectiveness of environmental measures identified in the project to date, using modelling tools such as MAC (marginal abatement cost) methodologies.
  • Evaluate farmer participation and willingness to adopt measures. This task will involve a Choice questionnaire design and econometric analysis of survey data.
  • Interpretation of results, project report and peer reviewed papers.
  • Assist in dissemination of results at stakeholder and farm level.

The successful post-doctorate fellow will work on a DAFM funded project that includes a consortium of researchers from Teagasc, NUIG, AFBI and University of Ulster. The overall objective of this research is to provide strategies for nutrient management on farms in sensitive catchments derived from a research agenda examining the optimum nutrient use and farm management. The research will focus on agriculture in case-study catchments. Furthermore, the project proposes to add a socio-economic dimension to this concept with support and participation from the farming community in these areas through the collaborative efforts of socio-economic and environmental scientists.

This is a research focused training role, the primary purpose of which is to provide early career scientists with the opportunity to develop their research skills and competencies.

The PD Fellow will, while working in conjunction with senior research staff, gain insight and experience into a variety of areas including the processes of project and budgetary management, publishing in peer-reviewed academic journals, writing grant applications, and attracting external funding; the development of active collaboration with relevant national and international research communities; the development of communication and presentation skills, leadership and management skills, and overall career development.
