Programme Officer: Transboundary Water Management

The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is a Stockholm-based policy institute that generates knowledge and informs decision-making towards water wise policies. Founded in 1991, SIWI performs research, builds institutional capacity and provides advisory services in five thematic areas: water governance, transboundary water management, climate change and water, the water-energy-food nexus and water economics.  Annually, SIWI organises the World Water Week in Stockholm and hosts the Stockholm Water Prize, the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and the Stockholm Industry Water Award.
SIWI  is currently recruiting a Programme Officer to work with the thematic area of Transboundary Water Management and support to the implementation of the new UNESCO Category II Centre on Water Cooperation for a maximum of 2 years.

The Role of a Programme Officer

The Programme Officer will be supporting the development and implementation of the transboundary water management team activities.

Duties of a Programme Officer

  • Undertake assignments individually and/or support members of the team/group.
  • Develop new ideas.
  • Organise workshops, trainings and meetings.
  • Function as a contact person and manage external consultants.
  • Process complex documents and prepare reports as required.
  • Budgeting and reporting.

Other activities can also occur and the tasks can be expected to change over time according to assigned projects.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in natural or social sciences – preferably with focus on water resource management or development issues.

Previous Experience

  • 2-3 years of experience of development work preferably with links to transboundary water issues.
  • Experience of projects in developing countries, preferably with transboundary water aspects.
  • Experience from work with assessing results chains.
  • Experience of capacity building, applied research and/ or advisory services.

Language and communication skills

  • As the working language is English, the applicant must have excellent written and oral ability, including presentation skills, in English, and preferably another international language. Knowledge of Swedish is not necessary.
  • Knowledge of other languages considered an extra advantage.

  • Problem solving analytical ability. Works well with complicated issues. Analyzes and break down problems into their constituent parts and solves complex problems.
  • Financial awareness. Understands and applies commercial principles. Focuses on costs, revenues and efficiency from an economic perspective.
  • Multi-tasking ability. Able to manage several assignments in parallel.

Other Requirements

Must be able to travel approximately 25% of the work time.
