PRESS AND INFORMATION OFFICER

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 28 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation based in Kuala Lumpur represents the European Union in Malaysia, and plays an essential part in EU political, economic and commercial relations with the host country, as well as providing information on the policies and institutions of the EU.

They offer a post of Press and Information Officer in Political and Press & Information Section to contribute to improving the visibility of the European Union in Malaysia. Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Political, Press and Information Section and in close liaison with the Head of Delegation, Head of Sections and staff of the Delegation, the selected person will help raise the communication, visibility and profile of the EU and of the Delegation to Malaysia through developing the Delegation’s overall communication and visibility strategy. His/her activities will comprise of: planning, organising and implementing the Delegation’s press and information activities, including outreach events, High Level Meetings, EU State visits as well as public affairs and cultural events (e.g. European Film Festival). He/she will initiate, prepare, evaluate and monitor press and media actions; draft, edit and distribute publication materials; monitor local press, both hard copy and online; manage the Delegation’s website and social media accounts; manage the information budget of the Delegation; advise and support the Delegation on all communication matters, including interviews by the Head of Delegation.

The position at the EU Delegation in Malaysia will be in accordance to regular office working hours and conditions. The successful candidate will be offered an open-end employment contract as Local Agent – Group I.

• University degree in international relations, media, communication, journalism or other relevant field.

• Sense of initiative.

Specialist knowledge

• Excellent knowledge and practical experience of formulating (written and oral) and implementing a communication strategy.

• Excellent ability to carry out Press and Information projects such as publication editing and organisation of events.

• Excellent knowledge of the European Union and EU-Southeast Asia relations.

Professional experience

• At least 3 years of working experience in the press and information, media or journalistic sectors.

• Good knowledge of the Malaysian media environment.

Languages

• Excellent command of English and Malay (written and spoken). The command of other languages can be an advantage.

Knowledge of IT tools

• Excellent command of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)

• Experience in using social media (Facebook, Twitter)

Interpersonal skills

• Able to work as a team member with good inter-personal skills.

• Ability to work in a multicultural environment.

• Service mind attitude.

Personal qualities

• A keen interest in promoting cooperation between the European Union and South East Asia / Asia.

Minimum physical requirements

• Suitable to regular office working conditions.
