cosmopolitalians.eu-logo-tmbApplications are invited for a position of Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the School of Experimental Psychology, University of Bristol. This is a full-time position with a duration of 36 months. The post is one of two associated with a three-year research project entitled “Improving literacy outcomes in struggling readers: A randomised control study of a morphological intervention”, which is supported by a grant from the Nuffield Foundation to Prof Colin Davis and Prof Jeffrey Bowers. The project involves a randomised control trial to test the efficacy of a morphological training intervention, relative to a phonics intervention and a waiting list control. The intervention will be delivered by school teaching assistants, who will be trained on morphological and phonics interventions by specialists during the course of two workshops.

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Psychology or a relevant subject area. Experience of working with children and teachers in educational, clinical or health-related research would be highly desirable. Previous experience with trials would be a distinct advantage, as would a background in literacy education, language disorders and/or the psychology of language. You will require excellent organisational, communication and presentation skills, as well as a broad range of research skills including quantitative methods and experience administering standardised assessments.

Your main tasks will be:
●Recruiting schools to participate in the trial
●Day-to-day coordination of the trial, including regular and frequent school visits
●Development of training manuals for teaching assistants
●Screening and testing participants
●Organising two training workshops for teaching assistants
●Working with teaching assistants to provide guidance as required
●Managing casual employees who will assist with testing
●Designing additional tests and experiments
●Analysing results of the trial
●Writing up the results of the trial for publication
●Presenting the results at conferences and in public engagement talks
●Production of post-trial materials, including a DVD
