The Open Society European Policy Institute brings into EU policy debates evidence, argument, and recommendations drawn from the work of the Open Society Foundations in more than 100 countries.
The Open Society European Policy Institute is currently looking for an intern to start in September/October 2015. The internship is for six months and interns receive monthly remuneration if not already enrolled in a scholarship programme or receiving a grant. This internship programme, introduced in 2009, is only for the Open Society European Policy Institute in Brussels.
The Internship programme is an opportunity for young graduates to gain work experience and increase their understanding of open society issues (such as human rights, justice, democracy, good governance, etc) especially at EU level and aims at giving the intern an insight into the work of the Open Society European Policy Institute in particular while providing the Open Society European Policy Institute with the assistance and contribution of the intern.
Job Profile
The intern’s main tasks will be related to providing support to the work of Open Society European Policy Institute on EU’s foreign policy, especially in the following areas: Eastern Partnership; crisis in Ukraine; EU bilateral relations with the countries of the eastern neighbourhood with a focus on promotion and implementation of democratic reform; enabling environment for civil society and EU support to human rights defenders in the eastern neighbourhood. The intern will also be asked to complete tasks in other areas as required. The successful candidate will work at Open Society European Policy Institute’s office in Brussels under the supervision of the Policy Analyst for EU External Relations with Eastern Europe, South Caucasus, and Russia. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

Monitoring of EU policies and developments in specific areas

Preparing briefing notes, meeting reports and other factual and analytical documents

Attending relevant meetings at EU institutions, non-governmental organisations and other internal and external events/ conferences

Assisting with desk research on specific areas

Organising and setting up meetings: logistics and administration
-
Assisting with forward planning/rolling advocacy calendar

Updating the contacts databases
-
Performing other related duties as required
Qualifications

Masters level degree, or equivalent experience in the field of international affairs, EU studies, human rights, international law, or conflict studies.

A good understanding of the politics and history of the post-Soviet region.

A good understanding of EU processes and policy instruments, especially as regards EU foreign relations

Human rights experience is an asset

Experience within an NGO or international organisation is desirable

Interest in the activities of OSEPI and the Open Society Foundations

Computer literacy, with a good knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office

Good writing skills
-
Experience in coordinating and facilitating meetings and events is an asset

Fluent spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of Russian is desirable. Knowledge of French, German or other EU languages is an asset

Attention to detail, good communication and interpersonal skills required
