About the role
The Marine Policy Researcher will provide scientific and legal research capacity for their project on improving fisheries management in the EU, and other projects as appropriate.

The role will initially be for 6 months, with possibility for extension. The researcher will be an integral member of the Biodiversity team and their main tasks will be carrying out background research on environmental issues and policies, preparing internal briefs on various topics and supporting the development of public-facing briefings and other advocacy materials on fisheries, aquaculture and related areas of EU environmental policy.

Job Responsibilities

The Marine Policy Researcher will:

  • Critically analyse laws, legislative proposals and policy proposals that will impact upon fisheries, aquaculture, or other EU environmental issues as relevant;

  • Conduct background research and prepare internal briefs on various topics as required by the team;

  • Support the development of briefings, reports, blogs or other outputs on issues relevant to the fisheries project;

  • Present internal updates on relevant issues, for example at team meetings;

  • Monitor events at EU, international and national levels which are relevant to the work of the team, including attending events or meetings as required;

  • Support the team to provide scientific or legal advice on request to NGOs, staff at the EU institutions and individuals in order to achieve project objectives;

  • Support the team in raising public awareness about relevant issues through the development of printed materials, social media, and coordination of events if applicable;

This list is not exhaustive and the selected candidate will be required to undertake other relevant tasks.

Experience and knowledge

The successful candidate will have:

  • (At least) undergraduate studies in a relevant scientific field (e.g. marine science, fisheries management, ecosystem assessment/valuation);

  • A good understanding of the EU Common Fisheries Policy and some knowledge of other EU environmental laws;

  • An understanding of the EU institutions and the EU decision-making process;

  • An interest in fisheries, aquaculture, biodiversity and conservation issues;

  • Experience of responding to competing deadlines and managing multiple tasks and priorities, ideally within a working environment;

  • Ideally, knowledge of other EU laws and regulations (such as the EU Habitats Directive) and EU policies, such as the EU Biodiversity Strategy;

  • Some knowledge of natural capital and/or experience with methods relating to the valuation of nature (desirable).

Competencies and skills

  • Strong research and analytical skills and an interest in performing rigorous analysis and comparison to support environmental advocacy work;

  • Ability to grasp quickly and accurately new and complex concepts as well as scientific, technical and policy issues, and new areas of law and policy;

  • Demonstrated ability to modify language, content, and style to address the needs of different audiences, including explaining complex scientific issues in lay language;

  • Excellent organisational skills and efficient management of multiple tasks and priorities; able to work well under pressure;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to summarise lots of complex information into a concise briefing document;

  • Reliable and understands the importance of meeting deadlines;

  • Ability to be creative in relation to tackling problems and identifying novel solutions;

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small team but also to execute work independently and take the initiative when required;

  • Fluency in another European language (desirable);

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, with ability to foster positive working relationships with diverse internal and external individuals;

  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft suite – Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).

Salary:The salary bracket for this role is between GBP £23,000 and GBP £27,000 depending on experience.

Location: London, UK (may involve occasional travel within the UK and/or EU)
