Applicants are welcome to also express their preference as to a desired type of work within the preferred organisational unit(s), although it may not be possible to meet these preferences.
  • One recommendation letter
  • Candidates who have already participated in the programme are ineligible.

Contract Duration

Legal Professionals (LP) are required to work full time for a period between three and four months (to be agreed to prior to commencement) and only up until the 31 March 2017.

Remuneration

The LP programme is funded through a grant made available by the European Commission. In addition to covering the costs of travel to and from The Hague (where applicable), the Court will provide a monthly remuneration of €2,000 to the selected candidates. Please note that due to the nature of the assignment, LPs cannot bring their families along.

Background

The LP programme aims to provide professional opportunities at the ICC to legal representatives and/or other legal professionals from situation countries (currently: Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Georgia, Kenya, Libya, Mali, Sudan (Darfur) and Uganda), and countries under preliminary examination (currently: Afghanistan, Burundi, Colombia, Guinea, Iraq, Nigeria, Palestine, Registered Vessels of Comoros, Greece and Cambodia, and Ukraine). Only in very exceptional circumstances will candidates from other countries also be considered.

Participants in this programme will gain first-hand experience from and knowledge of the ICC and its procedures. This will allow participants to develop their legal skills and knowledge of the Rome Statute system, and to subsequently impart lessons learned and best practices to their home organisations. Witnessing the functioning of the only permanent international criminal court will enable participants to contribute to the development of national capacities in their home countries to investigate and prosecute crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC. Upon completion of their contract, LPs will also submit a short report detailing their experiences and activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities will greatly vary and will depend largely on the organisational unit of the Court that the incumbent will be placed within, and the operational needs in that unit. You may find more information on the work of each of the organs of the Court by clicking on this link. The duties and responsibilities will also depend on the profiles and, to the extent possible, expressed interests of the applicants themselves. As such, the precise duties and responsibilities of each incumbent will be determined by the relevant receiving organisational unit and communicated to the selected candidates at the moment of making an offer of the placement on the programme.

Required Qualifications
Education

The Court aims to attract Legal Professionals with a strong academic background, although candidates with other backgrounds may also be considered.

Experience

Examples of well-placed applicants include candidates employed with governmental, non-governmental or inter-governmental organisations, national jurisdictions, and broader civil societies; or individuals who have practised as judges, investigating magistrates, prosecutors or lawyers in a field relevant to the work of the Court; or who have engaged in extensive academic research, writing or teaching in any of the disciplines relevant to the work of the Court.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Adaptability to a multicultural and multilingual working environment encompassing the principal legal traditions of the world.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team as well as independently.
  • A good standard of computer literacy (especially Microsoft Office applications).
  • Other important qualities are discretion, reliability, intellectual rigor, precision, perseverance, honesty, creativity, co-operative spirit and integrity.

Knowledge of Languages

Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English, is required. Working knowledge of the other is considered an asset. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
