Head of Policy and Advocacy – European Youth Forum

The European Youth Forum (YFJ) is the Platform of Youth Organisations in Europe. Independent, democratic and youth-led, it represents more than 90 National Youth Councils and International Youth Organisations from across the Continent. The Youth Forum works to empower young people to participate actively in society to improve their own lives, by representing and advocating their needs and interests and those of their organisations towards the European Institutions, the Council of Europe and the United Nations.

The Forum is recruiting a Head of Policy and Advocacy. The successful candidate will lead the Policy and Advocacy department and will report to the Secretary General.

S/he will be responsible to:

TASKS

• Lead and report on a sharp advocacy strategy of the platform.
• Be a member of the Management team of the Secretariat.
• Lead, supervise and support the work of the Policy and Advocacy Department
• Provide guidance in the development of policy documents and advocacy strategies towards the institutions and other stakeholders.
• Contribute to the preparation and running of statutory meetings, including Board Meetings, and ensure the implementation of their policy and advocacy outcomes.
• Lead in organisational development issues concerning policy and advocacy of the platform.
• Give support to the recruitment of new staff members.
• Report to and support the Secretary General.

PROFILE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

• At least 3 years of work experience in advocacy work towards institutions and private stakeholders, ideally on behalf of a membership organisation.
• Proven track record of 2 years experience in team supervision and people management.
• A university degree is strongly desired but can be compensated by extensive relevant NGO and/or non-formal education experience.
• Strong knowledge of the areas of concern for youth, and of the European Union, Council of Europe and United Nations System and analyse policies from a youth perspective.
• Background and experience in a youth organisation or organisation working on youth issues, experience from a Youth Forum member organisation is a plus.
• Experience working in a multicultural environment.
• Ability to travel and to work flexible hours and on weekends, when required.
• Ability to live in Brussels or the surrounding area.

• Capacity to coordinate several projects simultaneously, demonstrating excellent time management and organisational skills in stressful situations;
• Excellent English is a must and knowledge of another language is an asset;
• Computer literacy, with good working knowledge of word processing, e-mail and internet applications.

TERMS OF THE CONTRACT

The duration of the contract is five years. The contract is full time (35 hours per week) and the gross monthly salary (for a M3 position according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement currently applied at the European Youth Forum) is 3.825 Euros. A relocation package, hospitalisation insurance and other benefits are available. Travel expenses within the Brussels region are covered by the European Youth Forum.

YFJ require applicants to inform them about any possible conflict of interest. Please note that in case of being selected to be the Head of Policy and Advocacy in European Youth Forum, working and/or volunteering for member organisations of the European Youth Forum, institutions, political parties and other representative civil society organisations at European level might be incompatible while acting as the Head of Policy and Advocacy in the European Youth Forum.
